Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
PSEUDO- (from Greek pseudes - false), a prefix to various terms, used to emphasize only the external similarity of two phenomena. Thus, speaking of pseudocyst, pseudo-myxoma, pseudoparalysis, pseudohallucinations, and the like, one has in mind processes and phenomena that only outwardly resemble a true cyst, myxoma, paralysis, hallucinations, etc. In Russian, the prefix pseudo- is translated as "false", speaking for example of false dropsy, false croup, etc.
