GENICHESK, see Mud-cure resorts. HENLE, Friedrich (Friedrich Gustav Jacob Henle; 1809–1885), one of the most prominent anatomists of Germany, a close pupil of Johannes Müller. He studied medicine in Bonn and Heidelberg. Upon defending his dissertation — «De membrana pupillari aliisque oculi membranis pellucentibus» (Bonn, 1832) — he went with Müller to Paris, where he worked in the Jardin des Plantes. In 1834, along with his teacher as his prosector, he moved to Berlin, where he grew close to Schleiden and Schwann. In 1837, to obtain the right to teach (pro venia legendi), he presented «Symbolae ad anatomiam villorum intestinalium imprimis eorum epithelii et vasorum lacteorum» (Berlin, 1837; a summary of data on the anatomy of intestinal villi). Three years later, Henle became a professor of anatomy in Zürich; here he completed his «Allgemeine Anatomie» (Leipzig, 1841), which brought him world fame; together with the clinician Pfeufer, he founded the «Zeitschrift für rationelle Medizin» (1844); he then moved to Heidelberg, and finally, from 1852 until his death, served as the director of the Anatomical Institute in Göttingen. An extremely versatile and outstanding researcher, Henle enriched science with numerous fundamental discoveries.

Anatomie d. Menschen» (Braunschweig, 1880).
