Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
Dysovaria, dysovaria, a disorder of ovarian function. The etiology of dysovaria, like that of hyperovaria and hypoovaria, is associated with a disturbance in the function of the glandular part of the ovary. These changes may be caused by either congenital insufficiency or may develop as a result of infection. Ovarian function can also be impaired secondarily, as a result of the impaired activity of other endocrine glands. Dysovaria is used to explain bleeding in virgins (so-called pubertal bleeding), as well as a portion of climacteric bleeding.
