Summary

Azo compounds are numerous organic substances containing the azo group (-N=N-), with those bound to aromatic radicals being of the greatest significance. These aromatic compounds form solid, crystalline, colored substances that play a crucial role in the dye industry, including valuable azo dyes used in microscopy.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

Azo compounds are numerous organic compounds containing the azo group -N=N-. Of the greatest importance are those azo compounds in which the azo group is bonded to two aromatic radicals (aryls). These aromatic azo compounds are solid, crystalline, colored substances. Their derivatives play an extremely important role in the dye industry; a number of valuable dyes—azo dyes—belong to this group, including those used in microscopy (see Azo Dyes).
